The Institute of African American Research (The Institute or IAAR) has, as its central mission to advance scholarly identification, investigation, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of broad-based, interdisciplinary research on peoples of recent African descent throughout the transatlantic Diaspora, with a particular emphasis on Black Americans. As such, the Institute is concerned with the history, biology, culture, social experiences, and thought of African Americans. Three engines drive the IAAR’s core mission. The Endogenous Knowledge Unit is tasked with documentation of the indigenous African American (emic) perspectives on a cross-section of topics while the Integrated Research Liaison Unit is charged, as part of its’ collaborative mission, with the creation of sophisticated, nuanced models of the African American experience and the development of sustainable solutions to the current problems facing African Americans. The Research Technology Laboratory has as its’ mission the development of computational science models and products that both depict and predict diverse aspects of African American life.
