The Penn Center – the site of one of the country's first schools for freed slaves and one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence today. Since its founding in 1862, as the first academic school for African Americans newly freed from slavery, Penn has played a major role in education, the Civil Rights Movement and in creating community and individual self-reliance throughout our Southern coastal communities.Programs at Penn Center support the education of Sea Island children, help native coastal landowners protect their land and fragile environment and preserve the unique African American Sea Island Gullah culture, vigorously promoting its influence on our nation's collective heritage.
