As early as 1690, Whitehall was used by military expeditions to wage war because of its location on one of two main transportation corridors. It played a strategic part in the American Revolutionary War, and later in the War of 1812. After the war a canal was built that made Whitehall a busy maritime trade port that became its hallmark. Whitehall (located in Washington County) is the birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
